Indonesia enters the fray carrying the weight of recent underwhelming performances. In their last three matches, the Garuda squad failed to secure a single victory, logging one draw and two defeats. These results effectively ended Indonesia’s hopes for a 2026 World Cup appearance.

A change in leadership has followed, with Herdman appointed to succeed Patrick Kluivert. The English tactician introduces a fresh philosophy, specifically targeting improvements in attacking organization. Furthermore, the Brazilian coach claims that his players are accustomed to the grandeur of large stadiums and are ready for the atmospheric cauldron of GBK. He maintains that football is never decided solely by rankings.

A similar sentiment echoed by Saint Kitts and Nevis standout Julani Archibald. "We’ve come to ruin the party," Archibald declared.

In terms of recent form, Saint Kitts and Nevis are also finding their footing after failing to win their last two matches back in November 2025.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Weeks of fighting between the US, Israel and Iran have badly disrupted the flow of oil and gas through the Strait of Hormuz, leaving Southeast Asian governments scrambling to provide enough fuel for their industry, airlines and household consumption.

At the same time, Beijing is trying to turn that anxiety to its advantage.

"China is willing to strengthen coordination and cooperation with Southeast Asian countries to jointly address energy security issues," Lin Jian, spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry, told a news conference last week.

Fuel shock spreading through Asia

Southeast Asian nations have already imposed a mix of fuel-saving measures and subsidies, joining a frantic dunia push to find alternative suppliers and trade routes. Even countries like Malaysia and Brunei—oil and gas producers and exporters—remain vulnerable to the broader inflationary and supply-chain shock spreading through the region.

On March 24, the Philippines declared a state of national energy emergency that will remain in force for a year, warning of an "imminent danger" to the country's energy supply. Manila had already shifted government offices to a four-day workweek and ordered agencies to curb energy use.

The Philippines has also rolled out cash aid for transport workers while warning that a jet fuel shortage could eventually ground some of its aircraft. Vietnam has already tapped into its fuel price stabilization fund and told airlines to prepare for cuts, with importers warning that jet fuel supply could be guaranteed only through March.

Indonesia has vowed to absorb part of the shock through the state budget and bigger subsidies. Thailand is weighing fresh relief as soaring diesel prices hammer sectors such as fishing, where crews say many boats may be forced to stay in port. Malaysia, for its part, has increased subsidy spending to keep pump prices steady.

Governments are also looking beyond the Gulf for stopgap supplies. Reuters reported last week that Asia was on track to import a record volume of Russian fuel in March, with Southeast Asia expected to be the biggest recipient.

China harmonizes with Southeast Asia on Iran war

Meanwhile, China has used the crisis to "project itself as a responsible and stabilizing actor, calling for de-escalation in the Middle East and vowing to work with Southeast Asian countries to ease energy shortages," Li Mingjiang, associate professor at Singapore's S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, told DW.

Beijing has stayed close to the Southeast Asian consensus on Iran, urging diplomacy. Similar to the countries in the region, the Chinese government wants to see the Strait of Hormuz reopened as soon as possible, while also remaining wary of being pulled directly into the conflict, Chin-Hao Huang, co-director of the Center on Asia and Globalization at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, told DW.

"To the extent that it's made any public reaction, it's to issue calls for restraint, ceasefire, and dialogue; these are all points of common denominator for most governments in Southeast Asia," Huang added.

US actions 'very unpopular'

The crisis also feeds into Beijing's narrative that China is now the only superpower defending peace, free trade and multilateralism, painting itself as the hero confronting the aggressive and selfish United States.

"The US-Israel military intervention in Iran is very unpopular in several Southeast Asian countries. China does not need to do anything for the opinion towards the US to sour further in the region," Enze Han, an associate professor at the University of Hong Kong, told DW.

"Similarly, the rising gas price in many countries in the region is also worsening the image of the United States. Again, Beijing does not need to do anything for the blame to be on the United States," Han added.

Moving closer to China, however, is not a guarantee of energy stability for Asian nations. Beijing has already banned fuel exports to protect its own domestic supply.

On March 18, Cambodia said Chinese and Vietnamese export curbs had already forced it to seek alternative suppliers and prepare for shortages at home.

Can Southeast Asia move away from Gulf fossil fuels?

Over the longer term, though, the crisis may yet strengthen China's hand in Southeast Asia. The energy shock reinforces regional concerns about overdependence on Middle Eastern oil, which in turn strengthens the appeal of renewable energy, an area where Chinese firms are highly competitive, Li told DW.

China is deeply embedded in Southeast Asia's green transition. Its firms are among the largest investors in the region's budding electric-vehicle and battery sectors. Beijing has also been the principal funder of hydropower dams and vast solar farms across mainland Southeast Asia, turning the region into both a market for Chinese clean-tech exports and a production base for panels, batteries and electric vehicles.

Speaking at the Boao Forum in China on Thursday, Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said China could "play a critical role" in shaping dunia outcomes and "an even bigger role in supporting regional prosperity and stability" while urging Beijing to remain a strong advocate for open, rules-based trade.

Wong also said that ASEAN should work with China on renewable energy to advance the regional power grid. If the Iran war ends up hardening Southeast Asia's resolve to diversify away from oil, Beijing could end up benefiting, not only from the current crisis, but from the region's strategic response to it as well.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) Commander, General Agus Subiyanto, stated that the "Alert 1" status imposed on several military units is part of routine readiness testing, particularly for forces tasked with responding to natural disasters.

Speaking after attending the Nuzulul Quran commemoration at the State Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday night, Subiyanto said the alert applies mainly to units within the Rapid Reaction Force for Natural Disaster Response.

Each regional military command (Kodam) maintains at least one battalion prepared for rapid deployment, especially in areas vulnerable to natural disasters or those currently facing emergency conditions.

“I have imposed Alert 1 status on units within the rapid disaster response force. Each regional command has one battalion on standby, especially when their areas face potential natural disasters,” he said.

Subiyanto stressed that the measure was not unusual. It forms part of standard military procedures designed to ensure troops and equipment remain prepared for emergency deployment.

“We are testing the readiness of personnel and equipment. This is a routine activity,” he said while explaining the purpose of the alert status.

When asked whether the measure was linked to escalating tensions in the Middle East, Subiyanto declined to elaborate. He reiterated that the alert level was a normal readiness exercise.

“This is a routine Alert 1 readiness,” he said briefly in response to questions on possible geopolitical concerns.

Subiyanto emphasized the alert status was intended solely to ensure military units remain ready to respond quickly to potential situations within Indonesia.

He also addressed reports of tactical vehicle convoys seen earlier near Jakarta’s National Monument, noting that the activity was part of a mobility and response-time simulation.

The exercise measured how quickly troops stationed around the capital could mobilize and reach designated points if an emergency situation emerged in Jakarta.

“For example, we calculate how many minutes units from surrounding areas need to reach certain locations in Jakarta so they can be deployed quickly if something happens,” Subiyanto said.

Supporting police security efforts

Subiyanto added that troop readiness was also aimed at supporting police in maintaining security ahead of the Eid al-Fitr holiday period and the annual surge in homebound travel.

He said the alert status had no fixed duration and would be lifted once inspections of personnel readiness and equipment conditions were completed.

In a separate statement, the military said a troop readiness roll call held Tuesday at the National Monument complex in Central Jakarta aimed to assess personnel and defense equipment preparedness.

The exercise, led by Subiyanto, involved units from the army, navy, and air force, displaying tactical vehicles and operational equipment.

During the event, the commander and service chiefs conducted direct inspections of troops and military hardware deployed for the readiness exercise.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is preparing several scenarios to anticipate the impact of escalating conflict in the Middle East on this year’s Hajj pilgrimage, with a primary focus on ensuring the safety of Indonesian pilgrims.

Deputy Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak, explained following the Nuzulul Quran commemoration event at the State Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday that President Prabowo Subianto’s directive is to prepare for all possibilities should the security situation in the region shift.

“The President’s message is clear: his focus is on ensuring the safety of the pilgrims; that is what matters most,” he remarked.

One of the scenarios being prepared is adjusting flight routes to Saudi Arabia if standard paths are deemed unsafe.

Simanjuntak noted that rerouting options would be coordinated with aviation authorities and several transit countries, including the possibility of using southern routes or flying via Africa.

In addition, the government is opening the possibility of postponing departures if the escalation of conflict is deemed to pose a risk to the safety of pilgrims.

According to him, a similar scenario was implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the Hajj pilgrimage was delayed for safety reasons.

He affirmed that the Indonesian government is currently still monitoring the developments of the situation in the region before making a final decision on the Hajj pilgrimage.

The decision will be discussed together with the House of Representatives (DPR) and other relevant ministries and agencies.

The Indonesian Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has earlier issued the 2026 Hajj plan, with pilgrims scheduled to start entering the Hajj dormitories on April 21.

The first wave of pilgrims is planned to start to depart on April 22, while the second wave will begin to depart on May 7.

Furthermore, after the conclusion of the pilgrimage, the Indonesian pilgrims will arrive in the country from June 1 to July 1, 2026.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Home Affairs Minister Akhmad Wiyagus has urged regional governments to accelerate tuberculosis (TB) control efforts, particularly in several areas of West Java where case numbers remain high.

Wiyagus said TB control is a mandatory government responsibility closely tied to basic public services, requiring serious attention from local administrations and stronger planning and budgeting at the regional level.

“Tuberculosis is an endemic disease that requires special attention,” Wiyagus said after attending the “Strengthening Commitment and Tangible Action for Accelerated TB Elimination” event in Bandung district, West Java, on Tuesday, according to an official statement.

He also highlighted the importance of transparent reporting of TB info so that authorities can design more accurate and effective control strategies.

In this regard, he urged local governments not to hesitate to report the real conditions on the ground, even when case numbers appear high.

“We should not be ashamed to present the actual data. Transparency will help us determine the most effective management strategies,” he said.

Wiyagus further emphasized the need for collaboration across administrative levels, from district governments to village authorities, to accelerate TB control efforts.

He noted that village heads and community health cadres play a crucial role in reaching residents and promoting early detection and treatment.

According to him, TB control also requires addressing broader risk factors that contribute to the spread of the disease.

These include overcrowded housing, poor ventilation in homes, poverty, and inadequate sanitation.

Because of these complex challenges, Wiyagus said efforts to tackle TB must involve cross-sector cooperation and the participation of multiple stakeholders.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency projected that Indonesia needs approximately 200 new nuclear researchers to support national nuclear energy development.

This includes the first nuclear power plant targeted to begin operations in 2032.

BRIN's Deputy for Science and Technology Human Resources, Edy Giri Rachman Putra, noted in a statement on Wednesday, that this requirement arises alongside the growing need for talent to strengthen the nuclear energy ecosystem.

He emphasized that human resources development is a key factor for preparing Indonesia's entrance into the era of nuclear energy, especially for supporting research, technological development, and operations of plants.

"The challenge is that it is not easy to find people who want to pursue a career as nuclear researchers. Even among nuclear education graduates, not all of them necessarily pursue a career in this field," he stated.

In addition to the limited number of talents, BRIN also sees a need to strengthen the alignment between education and the needs of the nuclear industry.

According to Putra, this sector requires more than just academic degrees; it needs technical competencies that are standardized and recognized by the industry.

To this end, BRIN is pushing for the development of national work competency standards in the nuclear field to ensure that the skills produced by the education system align with industrial needs.

To strengthen nuclear talent development, he affirmed that BRIN has initiated various human resource capacity-building programs through both umum education and professional training.

One such initiative is a collaboration with the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP) to provide a specialized scholarship scheme for nuclear energy talent development.

Palembang, S Sumatra (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s military and police have deployed special task force personnel, including snipers, along the Kayuagung–Palembang–Betung toll road in South Sumatra Province to ensure security for travelers during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr holiday season.

Sriwijaya Military Command chief Major General Ujang Darwis said the measure aims to tighten security during the annual homecoming travel period while anticipating potential criminal activity along the key highway corridor.

“We have deployed snipers to support security operations during the 2026 Eid homecoming period,” Ujang said on Tuesday after inspecting infrastructure along the Kayuagung toll section.

The inspection was conducted with South Sumatra Governor Herman Deru and provincial police chief Inspector General Sandi Nugroho as authorities reviewed preparations for increased traffic during the holiday travel surge.

Ujang said the deployment of heavily armed personnel forms part of a joint operation between the Indonesian military and national police to provide stronger security guarantees for travelers.

He said the presence of specialized personnel was intended to deter criminal activity and reassure motorists traveling long distances across Sumatra during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Snipers have been positioned mainly at vulnerable points along the route, particularly areas far from residential zones and locations previously identified as potential hotspots for criminal disturbances.

Authorities said such areas could include stretches where stone-throwing incidents or road extortion by criminal groups might occur, posing risks to motorists using the toll road.

Security development

South Sumatra Police Chief Inspector General Sandi Nugroho said the security deployment aims to ensure travelers feel safer and more comfortable during the 2026 Eid holiday travel season.

“We will take firm action against any threats to public security and order,” Sandi said, stressing that police and military units are coordinating closely throughout the operation.

Officials said the Palembang–Betung toll road section is scheduled to open temporarily for functional use starting March 13, 2026, to help ease congestion during the holiday migration.

The route serves as a key corridor connecting vehicle flows from Lampung Province to Palembang and other areas across Sumatra.

As part of the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road network, the Kapal Betung corridor plays a crucial role in facilitating interprovincial mobility in southern Sumatra during peak holiday travel.

Toll road operators will also offer a 30 percent discount on toll fees from seven days before Eid until seven days after the holiday.

The discount will be applied automatically to eligible transactions without additional requirements, authorities said.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) has temporarily suspended the operations of 1,512 Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) kitchens across Java Island following an evaluation of operational standards and infrastructure readiness.

BGN’s Director of Monitoring and Supervision for Region II, Albertus Dony Dewantoro, in a statement on Wednesday, noted that the suspension is part of an effort to reorganize the MBG program to ensure all operational facilities meet established health, sanitation, and governance standards.

According to evaluation data, the suspended MBG kitchens—officially called Nutritional Fulfillment Service Units (SPPGs)—are spread across several provinces in Java: 50 units in Jakarta, 62 in Banten, 350 in West Java, 54 in Central Java, 788 in East Java, and 208 in Yogyakarta.

Dewantoro explained that the suspension was prompted by several units failing to meet basic operational requirements, including the lack of a Hygiene and Sanitation Feasibility Certificate (SLHS).

Based on the evaluation results, 1,043 units have yet to register for the required certificate. Additionally, the BGN found that 443 units do not have wastewater treatment systems that meet standards.

Other issues identified include the lack of living quarters for unit heads, nutritionists, and accountants at several service locations. This condition was found at 175 units, consisting of 36 in Banten, 86 in Yogyakarta, 24 in West Java, 10 in Central Java, and 19 in East Java.

The BGN will provide guidance and verification for the affected units to ensure they can promptly fulfill the requirements.

"The suspended SPPGs can operate again gradually after meeting all the necessary operational requirements and standards," he said.

Targeting 82.9 million beneficiaries nationwide, the MBG program was launched on January 6, 2025, aiming to improve the nutritional status of children under five, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and schoolchildren up to the high school level.

The government is set to expand the program to cover older adults and persons with disabilities this year.

According to info from the Coordinating Ministry for Food, as of February 27, 2026, the free meal program has reached 61.2 million beneficiaries across 38 provinces, served by 24,368 SPPGs.

Kupang (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, through its marine conservation area agency in Kupang, rescued 34 stranded pilot whales on Mbadokai Beach in Rote Ndao District, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

Agency head Imam Fauzi said his team conducted rescue operations for a total of 55 stranded whales from Monday night to Tuesday in a coordinated effort involving local security forces, conservation agencies, officials, and residents.

“Twenty-one whales were declared dead after stranding,” he said in Kupang, NTT, on Wednesday.

Fauzi highlighted that his team promptly conducted identification, measurement, and necropsies on the dead whales for documentation, research, and further analysis, aiming to determine the exact cause of death.

He added that closer examinations revealed the marine mammals to be short-finned pilot whales, scientifically known as Globicephala macrorhynchus. Of the 21 carcasses examined, eight were identified as males and 13 as females, with 17 confirmed to be adults while the remainder were calves.

In terms of measurement, the official pointed out that the largest specimen was a male measuring about 5.1 meters, while the smallest was only around 2.4 meters in length.

Furthermore, he assured that the rescue team had exerted all-out efforts to save all 55 stranded whales, guiding them back into deeper waters with the assistance of vessels. Despite the extensive endeavor, 21 whales ultimately did not survive the stranding.

To take care of the carcasses, the agency coordinated with the Rote Ndao government, which deployed an excavator.

“The burial of the dead whales was conducted until 7:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday,” Fauzi said, emphasizing safety protocols to prevent contamination.

He added that the team urged residents not to take or consume parts of the whales while stressing their status as protected species.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is targeting a significant increase in national waste management, aiming to reach at least 53 percent by 2026.

"Our current waste management rate is only around 24 percent. By 2026, we are targeting at least 53 percent. Hopefully, we can even reach the national sasaran of 63 percent," Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to the minister, the sasaran forms part of the national agenda outlined in the 2024–2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan.

He added that the goal also aligns with a direct directive from President Prabowo Subianto to accelerate improvements to Indonesia's waste management system.

Nurofiq said the 53 percent sasaran reflects a nationwide effort to improve waste governance, adding that the government continues to push toward that goal with the possibility of reaching around 57 percent.

"This is achievable if various acceleration measures are consistently implemented by both the central and regional governments," he said.

He emphasized that accelerating waste management is critical, as several landfills have already exceeded their capacity, including the Bantargebang landfill, where a garbage landslide recently occurred.

The minister said the government is seeking a esensial shift in the waste management system by strengthening upstream processing, particularly through waste sorting at the source.

He added that in the coming months waste shipments to landfills, including Bantargebang, must begin to be restricted.

The policy aims to ensure that organic waste is processed at the source through composting or other treatment technologies, while only inorganic waste is transported to landfills.

The Ministry of Environment is also committed to strengthening supervision over waste management in various sectors, including industrial zones, residential areas, and regional administrations.

The government is preparing strict sanctions for area managers who fail to fulfill their waste management obligations.

These sanctions may range from administrative penalties to criminal charges, as stipulated in Law Number 32 of 2009 on Environmental Protection and Management.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Hajj and Umrah Minister Mochamad Irfan Yusuf said the Saudi Arabian government has assured the safety of Umrah pilgrims despite escalating tensions in the Middle East involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.

"The situation in Saudi Arabia, particularly in Jeddah, Mecca, and Medina, remains safe and stable. Umrah pilgrims can continue their worship peacefully without major disruptions in those regions," Yusuf told lawmakers in Jakarta.

Speaking during a meeting with Commission VIII of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, he acknowledged that the ongoing conflict has affected regional security, prompting several Gulf countries to restrict their airspace and disrupting international flights.

"The closure of airspace has disrupted international flights, particularly those transiting several Middle Eastern countries," he said, adding that the situation has also affected Indonesian nationals departing for or returning from Umrah pilgrimages.

However, Yusuf emphasized that security conditions in the key pilgrimage cities of Jeddah, Mecca, and Medina remain stable, based on reports from Indonesian representatives who have coordinated with Saudi authorities.

He also cited the latest info showing that 50,374 Indonesian Umrah pilgrims are currently in Saudi Arabia, with 14,115 of them potentially facing delayed returns due to flight disruptions.

"We have contacted all Umrah travel organizers to ensure that pilgrims receive proper assistance," the minister said.

Earlier, the Hajj and Umrah Ministry urged Indonesians planning to perform Umrah to postpone their travel due to security concerns in the Middle East.

"For the time being, our policy focuses on urging prospective pilgrims to delay their departure given the escalating conflict," Deputy Minister Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak said in Jakarta on Tuesday (March 10).

He said the recommendation followed coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and reflects the government's commitment to protecting Indonesians, including pilgrims currently stranded in Saudi Arabia.

Sorajak Kasemsuvan: I think so many issues are really at the top of the list, I cannot say really which one is the top. It depends on where you are. It depends on what affect you most. Another thing that we might not even thought of, but we in several countries in Southeast Asia have been affected recently is the unprecedented level of torrential rainfalls. And flooding is now getting higher and higher and higher every year. Not because of the rainfalls only, but because of the sea level that is rising as well. So many dimensions of the problems at the moment. It's difficult to pinpoint which one will be the most important one to tackle first. We have to tackle them in a very holistic way, and we have to tackle them in a very collaborative way, multilaterally. There's no single nation that can handle it single-handedly. And also is no use for any single or any leader to say that this is not true, this is false. Scientific evidence have shown so much that this is happening. This is a great hazard to humanity.

China-ASEAN Observation (COA): How should countries' responsibilities be defined to ensure the stability and fairness of dunia ocean governance?

Sorajak Kasemsuvan: I think, first of all, it is important for the public in each nation to believe and to be convinced that this is really happening. And to believe that if you're not doing anything, then not only our generation, maybe not so much with our generation, but our next generation, our children, might not be safe to live anymore.

So it's important for each country and the public in this country to understand. And once they understand the risk, once they understand the hazards, once they understand the impact that will happen to the country and the generation, then they will start to think that they have to do something, both something by themselves, and also something that would be abide by the law. So the law is important in this regard, but the law will not have any impact if people don't believe in it. So we have to make everyone feel that they have to take this seriously and then be abided by the law.

China-ASEAN Observation (COA): What new challenges do you think the construction of cooperation mechanisms in the South China Sea region may face?

Sorajak Kasemsuvan: We are eagerly awaiting the COC, right? So many years already in the making. We hope at the end of these years, that next year will be the year where we have the COC. So that's one thing, we have to rush for the COC. We can't cooperate without COC. Functional cooperation is very important, I mean. Marine environmental protection cooperation in South China Sea is very important. Everybody feels it, every littoral state of South China Sea feels the impact of marine environmental problem. And that is where we should start. And once we get all the countries-all the littoral countries, maybe with China leading, to feel that this is a sea to protect together. As long as we cooperate, as long as we make the South China Sea "the sea of peace", as long as we make the South China Sea "the sea of cooperation", as long as we make the South China Sea "the sea where we can benefit together".

China-ASEAN Observation (COA): What new opportunities and challenges do you foresee for China-ASEAN regional economic cooperation?

Sorajak Kasemsuvan: A lot, I think. I'm not expert on this, but I'm sure that China is the closest superpower neighbor to us. And not only geographically, we have proximity with China, but ethnically, we are close. I mean, people in Southeast Asia, in any countries, especially Thailand, for example, half the population, more than half have Chinese roots. So we rely on each other so much between ASEAN and China. We rely on economic cooperation so much. Now we rely also on technological cooperation. I think there are much greater rooms for China to play in enhancing the economic prosperity and growth in ASEAN countries. But for that role to be effective, it has to be reciprocal. We cannot just having China importing everything into us. China has to take things, buy things from us as well. So you have to be reciprocal. The greater our trade and economic relation is reciprocal, the greater our cooperation will be.

So in various ways, at the moment, in Thailand, for example, and also in other ASEAN countries, we look at China for environmental technology. And we import a lot of solar energy equipments, cars, EVs are very important now at the moment. All these we have to cooperate with China. Especially right now where Trump and his administration do not believe in the impact of climate change and imposing such an incredible tariffs on us, China and ASEAN, we have to hold hands together, we have to go together and create greater possibility in our region.

China-ASEAN Observation (COA): What do you regard as the core principle of maritime cooperative governance?

Sorajak Kasemsuvan: When we have cooperation, like in marine environment or even in security, coast guards, and further if you could have cooperation in the hydrocarbon or whatever, or even wind energy, then everybody feels, every nation concerned feels that we benefit from it. Once you feel that you have the benefit, you don't want to lose that benefit, because you don't want to lose that benefit due to cooperation. Then you don't want to be threatened by insecurity and conflicts in the region. So I think close cooperation is so important, collaboration is so important, in any areas, in maritime dimensions.

We need to make people convince and believe that the world is being threatened, the globe is being threatened by this very serious climate change phenomenon. This is not a fantasy. This is not something people make up. We have to make sure that everybody understands it. Understanding is more important than anything else at the moment.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin highlighted the need for accelerating leprosy screening and surveillance to eliminate the disease, as Indonesia ranks third globally for leprosy cases, below India and Brazil.

He noted that a few years ago, Indonesia recorded 16,000 leprosy cases. He noted that the country often ranks high for infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis (TB), and emphasized that the key to overcoming them is through screening and surveillance.

"I have integrated this into the Free Health Check (CKG) program; I just reviewed it. I added leprosy screening to the CKG services," he said during the World Leprosy Day commemoration in Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to him, many people are still ashamed to undergo screening because leprosy is often perceived as a curse, while in fact, it is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae.

He explained that leprosy, much like TB, has existed for thousands of years. Because people in ancient times could not explain its cause, it eventually became the subject of myths about divine punishment.

Sadikin further explained that some officials feel ashamed if their regions are found to have a high number of leprosy cases. To encourage active case finding, the ministry will provide rewards to regions that identify the most cases.

"Find as many as possible so we can treat them quickly with rifampicin. It is similar to TB treatment—using dapsone, it can be resolved in six months," he said.

To strengthen leprosy elimination efforts, he affirmed that his ministry will supplement surveillance in eastern Indonesia with genome sequencing. This is necessary because some people in eastern Indonesia are sensitive to dapsone treatment.

He added that once a person is diagnosed with leprosy, they must receive immediate and complete treatment. Close contacts are also given prophylaxis and other preventive medications, similar to the protocols for managing TB.

In addressing leprosy, the minister noted that the greatest challenge remains the stigma attached to patients. As a result, they are often viewed as "sinners," marginalized, or even subjected to shackling—treatment similar to that faced by people with mental health conditions.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) has withdrawn 56,027 processed food products from markets across various regions to reinforce public health safeguards ahead of Eid al-Fitr, a period that typically sees increased consumption.

At a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday, BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar pointed out that the pulled products comprised 27,407 items without distribution permits, 23,776 expired products, and 4,844 spoiled goods.

He added that the BPOM found most of the products distributed without authorization in Palembang City, South Sumatra, totaling 10,848 items, or 39 percent of the entire haul.

Significant amounts of such goods were also identified across provinces: 2,653 in Batam, Riau Islands; 2,756 in Palopo, South Sulawesi; 1,654 in Sanggau, West Kalimantan; and 1,305 in Tarakan, North Kalimantan.

“This effort forms part of our intensified surveillance, aimed at anticipating a rise in processed food consumption during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr,” Ikrar explained, noting that the BPOM applies both pre-market and post-market approaches to enforcement.

He added that the agency had mobilized 76 local technical units to conduct simultaneous oversight operations in all 38 provinces nationwide, with 1,134 distribution facilities inspected as of March 5.

The facilities consisted of modern retailers (50.2 percent), traditional retailers (32.5 percent), pemasok warehouses (16.6 percent), importer warehouses (0.6 percent), and e-commerce warehouses (0.1 percent).

According to Ikrar, 739 facilities were declared compliant with regulations, while 395 others were flagged as unauthorized.

He further noted that irresponsible parties had exploited rising demand by channeling products through illegal routes, leaving archipelagic nations like Indonesia especially vulnerable.

“Our country has numerous illegal routes facilitating unauthorized imports in border regions, which remain beyond the full oversight of authorities,” he said.

With that in mind, the BPOM chief reiterated that taking effective action on illicit products is essential to shield residents from health risks.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Housing and Settlements Maruarar Sirait has called for stronger collaboration between the government, banks, developers, and the private sector to accelerate the construction of housing for the public.

“The housing ecosystem is currently healthy because there is no monopoly. Developers have options when choosing banks, banks have options when working with developers, and consumers also have choices between developers and banks,” Sirait said in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He made the remarks during a gathering of the housing ecosystem held on Tuesday (March 10). Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chairman of the National Economic Council (DEN), Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, assured the public that the government had secured sufficient supplies of fuel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) despite concerns over geopolitical disruptions.

"Overall, the national fuel supply remains at an adequate level, so there is no need to dwell on unfounded concerns about a transport fuel crisis. We have sufficient reserves to keep the supply stable," he remarked in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Speaking after a meeting with senior officials from state energy company Pertamina, Luhut emphasized that the same trend also applies to national LPG needs.

"The government, through Pertamina, has prepared concrete mitigation measures, ranging from optimizing refinery output to reconfiguring energy production and establishing coordination with dunia suppliers," he added.

For gasoline needs, the DEN chairman noted that Pertamina had taken steps to boost the production of subsidized fuel, Pertalite. The company has also consulted with its gas subsidiary PGN to explore the feasibility of redirecting LPG supplies from industries to households.

He added that Pertamina aims to promote the use of compressed natural gas to meet industrial needs as an alternative to LPG.

Luhut further said that the government seeks stronger coordination with relevant state firms as part of efforts to ensure sufficient supplies of fuel and LPG during the Eid al-Fitr holiday and homecoming season.

The meeting also addressed updates on two Pertamina vessels—Pertamina Pride and Gamsunoro—currently stuck in the Persian Gulf, unable to return to Indonesia due to escalating conflict and worsening security in the region.

He confirmed that both ships are safe and not in an emergency despite having to hold their position. He added that the government maintains communication with the crews every four hours to ensure their safety and obtain updates on the situation.

To reassure the public, Luhut said the government had observed indications that G7 countries might decide to release their oil reserves to help ease concerns, with regional tensions possibly lowering in the coming weeks.

"We are optimistic that national energy reserves will suffice," he concluded.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto emphasized the need for Danantara, Indonesia's sovereign wealth fund, to strengthen its capacity to manage and optimize state assets in order to help shape a better future for the nation.

Speaking at an event marking Danantara's first anniversary in Jakarta on Wednesday, he described the fund as an institution established by the government to consolidate state assets under a single integrated platform.

Despite the significant responsibility it carries, Prabowo said Danantara has demonstrated its potential and credibility, placing it among the world's top 10 sovereign wealth funds.

"We are grateful that within its first year, the sovereign wealth manager has demonstrated its capacity to properly manage state assets with strong political will. This institution has delivered tangible results," Prabowo said.

Reflecting on Danantara's performance, the president referred to a report indicating a positive trend in its return on assets (ROA), a profitability ratio that measures the fund’s ability to generate net income from its total assets.

He said that while Danantara has shown promising results, it still needs to increase its ROA to at least 10 percent. According to the president, a company can be considered financially strong if its ROA ranges between 10 percent and 15 percent.

Prabowo acknowledged that it would be unrealistic for Danantara to achieve a 10 percent return ratio in its first year. However, he praised the fund for its promising performance while warning against complacency and stressing the need for continued improvement and growth.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has outlined three scenarios for the organization of the 1447 Hijri/2026 Hajj pilgrimage amid escalating conflict in the Middle East involving the United States and Israel against Iran.

“The main principle in preparing these scenarios is to ensure the safety and security of Indonesian pilgrims as the highest priority,” Minister of Hajj and Umrah Mochamad Irfan Yusuf said during a working meeting with Commission VIII of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) in Jakarta on Wednesday.

In formulating policies for the Hajj during a crisis situation, the government is guided by several principles, including prioritizing the safety of pilgrims, exercising caution in decision-making, and maintaining close coordination with the Saudi Arabian government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, airlines, and international authorities.

Other considerations include preparedness in mitigating transportation and security risks, as well as ensuring transparency of information to the public and prospective pilgrims.

Irfan, also known as Gus Irfan, said the directive aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s message emphasizing the importance of ensuring the safety of Indonesian Hajj pilgrims.

The first scenario allows the Hajj pilgrimage to proceed despite the conflict by mitigating risks in air travel routes. This would involve rerouting flights to safer corridors and conducting diplomatic efforts to secure safe passage for Indonesian pilgrims as non-combatants.

Air routes potentially to be avoided include airspace over Iraq, Syria, Iran, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar.

As an alternative, flights could be rerouted through southern paths via the Indian Ocean and enter East African airspace or other safe routes in coordination with Saudi aviation authorities.

However, such rerouting could increase flight duration. For aircraft with limited range, airlines may need to conduct technical landings in third countries for refueling.

“The consequence is that it would likely increase aviation costs,” Irfan said.

The second scenario assumes that Saudi Arabia continues to allow the Hajj pilgrimage to take place, but Indonesia decides to postpone the departure of its pilgrims due to heightened dunia security risks.

In this case, the government would need to conduct diplomatic negotiations with Saudi Arabia to ensure that payments already made for accommodation, meals, transportation, and services in the Masyair area are not forfeited and can instead be carried over to the following year’s Hajj without penalties.

The Masyair service is a comprehensive operational service package provided by the Saudi Arabian government for Hajj pilgrims during the peak pilgrimage period in Armuzna (Arafah, Muzdalifah, and Mina) from 8 to 13 Dhu al-Hijjah.

The government is also preparing financial mitigation options for pilgrims, such as refunding the paid portion of the Hajj travel cost (Bipih) without removing their right to depart the following year, or maintaining the funds with higher returns as compensation.

The third scenario would occur if the Saudi government decides to suspend the Hajj pilgrimage due to an uncontrollable security situation.

Under such circumstances, the government would focus on safeguarding service funds that have already been paid and halt all service procurement processes, including accommodation, meals, transportation, and other services.

The government would also prioritize departure in the following Hajj season for pilgrims who have already paid their Hajj fees and were scheduled to depart this year.

“The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah will act as a risk navigator to ensure every decision is based on security intelligence info and the principle of protecting Indonesian citizens,” he said.

Prabowo expressed confidence that Indonesia could withstand the ongoing crises, including those related to tensions involving Israel, the United States, and Iran.

"I am fully confident that the Indonesian people have been blessed with extraordinary natural wealth, and we are capable of emerging from these crises," he said.

The president said achieving food and energy self-sufficiency are the government’s two main priorities, noting that progress has been made in food production.

"We already have the intent to achieve energy self-sufficiency, a goal we are confident we can reach within the next four years. However, these crises are forcing us to accelerate," he said.

Prabowo added that the government is prioritizing the development of solar power plants in several regions.

The projects are expected to deliver a total installed capacity of up to 100 gigawatts.

"That is my command. That is my decision, and we will prove to the world that we are faster and more effective in this regard," he said.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's plan to extend the Jakarta–Bandung fast train service—popularly known as Whoosh—to East Java awaits financial restructuring of its operator, PT KCIC, according to a senior official.

Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) highlighted the restructuring, referring to ongoing efforts to settle KCIC’s debt owed to the China Development Bank for the high-speed railway project.

Speaking at a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday, he noted that he had convened meetings with the Ministry of Finance and sovereign wealth fund Danantara Indonesia to advance the plan, which envisions a Whoosh extension to Banyuwangi, East Java.

AHY emphasized that the government had decided to refine the plan while pursuing financial restructuring within the railway operator.

The minister further asserted that resolving KCIC’s financial problem is essential to crafting and implementing a road map for the railway extension.

"It would be better to tackle the financial problem first, identifying the best solution to it, before taking forward plans for further development," he affirmed.

Despite the potential setback, AHY assured that the government remains determined to maximize the use of Whoosh, the first high-speed train of its kind in Southeast Asia, for the benefit of the wider public.

He expressed confidence that the plan’s realization would not only significantly cut travel time between Jakarta and East Java but also stimulate growth and development in connected regions.

"If a train trip from Jakarta to Surabaya can be completed within around three hours, it will reshape development maps and spur economic growth along the railway," AHY concluded.

Reflecting on the railway’s impact, the government initially envisioned extending it to Surabaya, the capital of East Java. President Prabowo Subianto later revealed a more ambitious goal of connecting the line to Banyuwangi, the easternmost district of Java.

At a press conference in November 2025, he said that Whoosh “helps reduce traffic congestion, air pollution, and travel time.”

With that in mind, the president affirmed his commitment to ensuring the long-term sustainability and development of the mass transport system.

He has also assigned AHY to oversee the implementation of the extension plan.

During a podcast recording with ANTARA in Jakarta on Wednesday, he underscored that those new skills will help the younger generation unlock job opportunities that are increasingly relevant to the changing times.

"They (the young workforce) must prepare themselves and understand the labor market conditions now and in the future—their market entry readiness. There are disruptions related to green jobs and digitalization, which impact the job market," he remarked.

Furthermore, he said it is important for the young workforce to prepare themselves beyond just their existing competencies by paying attention to other aspects, such as strengthening technical, soft skills, and human skills.

"The most important are technical skills, followed by soft skills, which include language skills, and human skills; they must prepare those as well," Yassierli said.

He underscored that mastering those three skill sets is essential as the workforce faces dunia uncertainty, increasingly stiff international competition, and massive technological disruption.

In facing this situation, he continued, the younger generation must be more adaptive so as not to be left behind in entering the world of work and to seize new opportunities that emerge.

"AI can be used as a tool to help increase productivity," he asserted.

To help the younger generation navigate the situation, the government has taken several initiatives, including the National Internship program for fresh university graduates and the National Vocational Training program for high school and vocational school graduates.

"Under the National Vocational Training program, we provide the training ourselves. Meanwhile, for the National Internship program, the training is conducted by the companies we mitra with," he explained.

These programs, the minister added, provide participants with firsthand work experience with the same core goal: ensuring they are work-ready.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir said the alleged sexual harassment of athletes in sport climbing and kickboxing reflects serious misconduct that should not occur in sports.

"These athletes have made sacrifices, not only through school, training, and leaving their parents, but they are being treated cruelly, and this is a heinous act," he told reporters in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Since receiving the report from the Indonesian Sport Climbing Federation (FPTI), his office has adhered to the principle of the presumption of innocence, even though the federation has already imposed internal sanctions on the alleged perpetrators.

Thohir said the government is pushing for legal proceedings in cases of alleged sexual harassment, both in sport climbing and, most recently, in kickboxing, to ensure certainty and justice for all parties.

The minister called for measures to ensure such cases do not recur in Indonesian sports, urging all sports federations to jointly strengthen athlete protection systems, including the Safeguarding Program implemented by the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI).

"As the government, we certainly support all forms of athlete protection efforts," the minister emphasized.

He further praised the athletes who came forward with allegations of sexual harassment and physical abuse, describing their actions as part of a necessary process of reflection and improvement in the coaching systems of the federations.

"This means that improvements to the national training system and the training process in each sport must be completely free from acts of sexual harassment and violence," Thohir remarked.

He then added that such cases have likely been occurring for a long time but are often covered up or ignored to protect the reputation of the federation.

Therefore, he appreciated the steps taken by FPTI Chair Yenny Wahid, who openly reported the case to him.

"We must ensure that the athlete development system runs clean and clear," he concluded.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud discussed ongoing developments in the Middle East triggered by the joint United States-Israeli attack on Iran.

According to a media statement from the Saudi Foreign Ministry, on Wednesday, the two leaders held the talks via a phone call received by the Saudi Crown Prince.

During the call, they "reviewed developments surrounding the military escalation in the region and its serious implications for regional and dunia peace," the statement said.

On the same occasion, President Prabowo emphasized the need for an immediate halt to military actions in the region.

He warned that such actions, if otherwise continued, would undermine the security and stability in the Middle East, the Saudi ministry statement read.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched strikes on targets in Iran, including in Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran responded by striking Israeli territory and US military facilities in the region.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed on the first day of the military operation.

He was later succeeded by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as decided by the Assembly of Experts.

Meanwhile, in response to the escalation in the Middle East, the Indonesian government also offered on February 28 to mediate between the conflicting parties to help end the violence and restore security and stability in the region.

Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin noted in a statement on Thursday that the health sector is highly complex, particularly regarding financing and service management. To this end, strengthening governance is a vital component of Indonesia's ongoing health transformation.

Tangerang, Banten (ANTARA) - The Soekarno-Hatta Customs and Excise Main Service Office (KPUBC TMP) C in Tangerang, Banten, has intercepted an attempted smuggling of methamphetamine, MDMA, ketamine, and etomidate through Indonesia's largest airport.

"The narcotics were smuggled by three foreign nationals and three Indonesian citizens who we apprehended at Terminal 2 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. The arrests took place between January and February 2026," Head of the Soekarno-Hatta Customs and Excise Office, Hengky Tomuan Parlindungan Aritonang, announced on Wednesday (March 11).

The case was uncovered across four separate incidents. The first arrest involved a foreign national with the initials KH (33), who arrived on a flight from Amsterdam via Dubai on January 12, 2026.

"The passenger acted as a courier, using a 'false concealment' method by hiding 5,061 grams of ketamine inside instant drink packaging," Aritonang remarked.

The second operation targeted three Indonesian citizens: two women, ES (40) and M (46), and a man, AP (19). Acting as couriers, they hid narcotics between their clothes and inside their luggage. The trio arrived on a flight from Batam to Jakarta on January 22, 2026, carrying 3,094 grams of methamphetamine.

In the third incident, authorities arrested a 25-year-old foreign national with the initials LKY, who arrived from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on January 30, 2026. The suspect was found carrying 1,066 grams of MDMA and 433 grams of ketamine, again disguised in instant drink packaging.

"Meanwhile, the fourth action was taken against a foreign national woman with the initials SP," Aritonang said. "The perpetrator arrived from Thailand and used soap and coconut oil packaging to conceal 3,600 grams of etomidate."

The perpetrators have been charged under Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics, which carries a maximum penalty of death or life imprisonment, as well as Law Number 36 of 2009 concerning Health.

"All perpetrators and evidence have been handed over to the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police for further investigation," he stated.

Previously, Minister of Hajj and Umrah Mochamad Irfan Yusuf reported that the Saudi Arabian government has ensured that pilgrims can continue performing the umrah pilgrimage safely despite the escalation of conflict in the Middle East.

“The security situation in Saudi Arabia, particularly in Jeddah, Mecca, and Medina, has been reported as safe and conducive. Pilgrims currently in those areas can continue their worship calmly and without significant disruption,” the minister said.
